The complete second season of HBO's hit vampire series True Blood hits store shelves today, May 25th. Many fans are probably curious as to whether or not this set is worthy of a purchase as they gear up for Season 3 to premiere on HBO on June 13th. The second season fell victim a bit to the sophomore slump in this reviewer's opinion. The show seemed to take a while to get going, but by mid-season it was right back to captivating television – honestly, the same could be said for Season 1. However, the finale of Season 2 wasn't really my cup of tea – it felt predictable and didn't leave as a grand a cliff hanger as the first season had. Not to mention Season 2 came across a bit hokier and campier than the first. However, it appears as this is just part of True Blood's identity, and if viewers can accept it for what it is – a campy, sexy soap opera filled with blood suckers and a good share of violence and the supernatural – they are sure to enjoy themselves quite a bit.

If you're reading this then you're likely to already be a fan of True Blood, so the real question is whether or not the BD is up to snuff…..hell yeah it is! As far as picture quality, it is very unlikely True Blood will ever look any better. The film is shot in such a way that there is a bit of grain, so if you take into account the intent then there really isn't anything to complain about. Lots of vivid colors and detail can be found throughout, although its much harder to provide a more in-depth analysis since each episode varies to some degree. The sound really excels on this 5-disc set, but the real winner comes in all the bonus content.

Seven different audio commentaries with the cast and crew as well as a couple fun bonus featurettes that bring you into the world of True Blood (The Vampire Report:Special Edition and Fellowship of the Sun:Reflections of Light). All of this content can also be found on the DVD release of Season 2, but it wouldn't be Blu-ray if it didn't include some BD-exclusive bonus content. Only available on the high-def format are character perspectives as well as a pro/anti vampire feed that runs during episodes and includes facts and trivia. The BD also provides the ability to flash back or flash forward in-scene to see the relevance of certain situations – an incredibly helpful too for those who get confused with the ever evolving storyline.

When you break it down, Season 2 of True Blood on Blu-ray is a great buy if you are a fan of the show. Twelve episodes and tons of bonus content can be had for as little as $39.99 thanks to some generous sale pricing during its week of release. When you consider many 90 minute movies carry a $30 BD price tag, this set really provides a wonderful amount of fang - I mean bang  - for your buck!

 This set rules.

If anyone is a fan of the show and has any interest in this set, you'd be a fool not to pick it up at Best Buy this week.

$39.99 is a STEAL.
